Ivanovo Rock Monastery

In between Tabachka and Rousse (the largest nearby town, where we would go once a week or so for groceries) lay the village of Ivanovo, which was the site of several medieval rock monasteries.

After driving by many times, we finally stopped to take a look. It was a short hike up to the cave entrance.

We were not allowed to take pictures inside, but here are a few pictures from the internet. The cave walls are covered in medieval frescoes. The caves were carved from solid rock in the 13th and 14th centuries. Really beautiful!

Here is the group of us, just outside the monastery.

And here's Gwendolyn, making a discovery that interested her much more than the medieval frescoes. She spotted another kid! He was pretty excited by her too. After trying to get them to exchange greetings in Bulgarian and English ("zdrasti! hi! zdrasti! hi! ") all the assorted parents gave up and decided the kids were happiest just pointing at each other.
