Rottnest Island

On the last day of my visit in Australia, I took a day trip to a island in the Indian Ocean. Just an hour outside of Perth, beautiful. Turquoise water, bike trails everywhere, little cottages for rent, no cars allowed. I wished very much that David and Gwendolyn had been there with me.

I took a boat ride around the island. It is on what they call "Humpback Highway" but the water was really rough and we did not see any migrating whales.

We did see a bunch of New Zealand fur seals, resting here next to a huge osprey nest.

And again, strange plants and animals were everywhere. I loved these quokkas. The island was misnamed by the Dutch, they thought these were giant rats and named the island "Rat's Nest" later becoming "Rottnest." But they are in fact marsupials, they looked very much like miniature kangaroos and were everywhere. I could just imagine Gwendolyn's squeals of delight - next time....
