Safe and Sound

After what seemed like weeks of packing, cleaning and organizing, we were finally ready to go. David lined up our suitcases in the hall, and -sadly- we said our last goodbyes to our lives in Germany.

Björn drove us to the airport and helped us maneuver our enormous number of suitcases toward check in (yes, amazingly this is an acceptable number of bags for 2 adults and 1 baby - David weighed each bag to the kilogram).

We were a little worried about how Gwendolyn would do on the flight. She spent a lot of the time like this, walking up and down the aisles, eliciting smiles and little conversations from many of the other passengers.

She also spent a lot of time like this - standing up and playing in her bassinet - not its intended purpose, I'm sure. But the flight attendants were extremely friendly and baby-tolerant.

And - thankfully - she finally spent quite a bit of time like this. Much to the relief of her tired parents.

Rob and Julie were at the custom's exit waiting for us and drove us home to their house in Carlisle.

Despite the fact that it was 4 in the morning Germany time, Gwendolyn was delighted by her new surroundings and spent a long time "bonding" with Julie's cats.

Rachel and Gwendolyn finally crashed, but David stayed awake to enjoy his first US cheeseburger. A wonderful homecoming!
