For many months now we've been monitoring (and trying to document) changes on Gwendolyn's tongue. After quite a bit of internet research (doctors on 3 continents could not identify the problem), David discovered that what Gwendolyn has is "geographic tongue." It's a benign condition that causes inflammations of the tongue, especially after eating certain foods (acidic foods like pineapple seem to be the principle culprits for the Wren). It's called "geographic tongue" or “migratory glossitis” we think because the patterns of tongue coloration change very quickly, looking like different continents over the globe.
It was very hard to get pictures at first.
But Wren got much more cooperative over time. And now when I show her the tongue pictures, she sticks her own tongue out right away.She doesn't seem too much affected by her geographic tongue. Occasionally after eating a new food, she'll hold her tongue and say "oww!" but she seems to recover almost immediately. And we're not sure, but it seems like she's getting the tongue patches less and less frequently. Tongue out, Little Wren!

Vivian has that, too. Did you know? It seems to have become less of a problem over time, but she can't binge on the offending foods: oranges, strawberries, pineapple, lemonade, limeade, tomatoes. We spent a year, year and a half, asking to see her tongue before she ate some of those foods. She seems pretty good at self-regulating now. Especially since she seems to like to eat only ice cream consistently!
